254. DTXXXIII. Sekizinci Tur

Round 8 report, 8th World Team Chess Championship 2011 Ningbo, China

01Armenia had their lead reduced to two points after drawing 2-2 with Azerbaijan in a lively match where Mamedyarov's win for Azerbaijan was equalised by Vladimir Akopian in the final game to finish. This means a draw against final round opponents Ukraine will give them the title, Ukraine in turn can catch them by beating them but only a 4-0 win will allow them to over-take. Closer are China who will need to beat Hungary in the final round by a big score for a chance. Final Round 9 play starts at 3am UK time.

Armenia 2-2 Azerbaijan

Armenia_2-2_Azerbaijan

With the threat of conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the air the chess matches between bitter rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan are always covered by the wider media in their countries and are always tense affairs. Levon Aronian looked to get a little something out of the opening against Teimour Radjabov but in the end it didn't amount to too much. Vugar Gashimov - Sergei Movsesian was likewise drawn. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov looked to have let Gabriel Sargissian off the hook after an early big advantage but then Sargissian blundered with 36...Kg6 rather than 36...Rd5 and lost because his rook could no longer stop the d-pawn. This left Vladimir Akopian having to try and salvage a point for Armenia by converting an advantage against Rauf Mamedov which he did so in a nervy looking finish from both players.
