Russia retains the lead after draw with Armenia in Round 3
Mark Crowther - Tuesday 19th July 2011
The 3rd round of the 8th World Chess Teams in Ningbo, China saw the fall of its final 100% record when Russia were held by Armenia with Aronian's win against Karjakin being the top pairing. Svidler leveled things up for the Russians. Hungary shocked Azerbaijan with a rather fortunate win on the back of a Polgar win and Gashimov's failure to convert a winning advantage against Almasi. Levon Aronian defeated Sergey Karjakin. Peter Svidler scored Russia's win against Armenia. Armenia and Russia drew 2-2 in the fixture of the day. Levon Aronian beat major top 10 rival Sergey Karjakin in a lengthy game. Aronian's 17.Nxc6 was a shock move and perhaps Karjakin could have got an advantage with 17...Nxb3 but instead had to suffer in a major piece ending for a very long time a pawn down until Aronian forced the win on move 74. Grischuk-Movsesian and Akopian-Nepomniachtchi were both drawn. Peter Svidler won against Sargissian where his doubled rooks on the 7th proved decisive. Judit Polgar's win was key for Hungary in Round 3. Hungary scored their first win of the event in beating Azerbaijan 2.5-1.5 probably rather fortunately. Judit Polgar beat Rauf Mamedov in a lively, if rather strange game. Peter Leko drew his third game in a row but surely should have played on when the game was agreed drawn in 32 moves. Zoltan Almasi was very fortunate not to lose his 3rd game in a row as black against Vugar Gashimov when he missed the concrete 49...Qc8+ and allowed a perpetual. Mamedyarov was held by Balogh in a really lively game. Israel beat hosts China 2.5-1.5. Wang Hao drew an interesting Sicilian against Emil Sutovsky on top board. Ilya Smirin may have had some winning chances against Yu Yangyi but in the end a draw by perpetual was probably fair enough. Tamir Nabaty scored the decisive point in beating Diren Ling in a French when black drifted into a lost ending after being fine out of the opening. The US beat tail enders Egypt 3.5-0.5. Ahmed Adly traded his way to a draw as white against Kamsky but after that there were wins for Alexander Onischuk, Yasser Seirawan and Robert Hess on the othe boards. The Ukraine edged past India 2.5-1.5 after a lengthy win by Alexander Moiseenko against Gopal. The remaining games were all drawn without too many traumas.
