Carlsen's ability to extract victories from endgames with a small advantage has already become legendary but this is more like a queenless middlegame 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.e3 Nf6 4.Bxc4 e6 5.Nf3 c5 6.0-0 a6 7.dxc5 The move was popularised by Kramnik when he used it with success against Garry Kasparov. It has plenty of venom even though the queens are traded 7...Bxc5 [7...Qxd1 8.Rxd1 Bxc5 enables Black to castle which is my preference] 8.Qxd8+ Kxd8 9.Be2 Ke7 10.Nbd2 Bd7 11.Nb3 Bd6? A small error which Carlsen seizes upon in a very surprising way [11...Bb6; 11...Ba7!] 12.Na5! Ra7 [Black has to surrender one of his bishops after which he is worse long term 12...b5 13.Nb7 Bb4 14.Bd2 Bxd2 15.Nxd2 and a white knight will come to c5 and b2-b4 may follow with advantage to White] 13.Nc4 Bb5 [13...Bc7 14.b3! and Ba3+] 14.b3 Rd8 15.Bb2 Bxc4 [15...Nc6 16.Rfd1 Raa8 17.Rxd6 Rxd6 18.Nxd6 Kxd6 19.Bd1!
