Russia hit the front after two rounds, Armenia held by USA

Russia scored their second 3-1 win to have the only 100% record at the end of the second round with wins for Nepomniachtchi against Polgar and Grischuk against Almasi in their match against Hungary. Armenia could only draw against the USA after Levon Aronian got a bit too enthusiastic with an unsound attacking idea against Gata Kamsky. Russia scored their second consecutive 3-1 victory in defeating Hungary. Leko held Karjakin on top board and Balogh drew with Vitiugov on bottom board. Zoltan Almasi lost for the second day running with white. Grischuk was at least level shortly out of the opening but there was no need at all for Almasi to commit suicide with 36.Bxb6 dropping the house. Ian Nepomniachtchi and Judit Polgar contested a sharp Sicilian where Polgar allowed the shot 31.Bxa6 wrecking her position. After six months of preparation for just four candidates games Shakhriyar Mamedyarov seems to be enjoying his return to more normal chess with a second win, this time in just 27 moves against Surya Shekhar Ganguly. Fellow Candidate Teimour Radjabov made light work of Pentala Harikrishna whose ill-judged 29th and 30th moves caused his position to be torn apart. Azerbaijan beat India 3-1 after the other two games were drawn. Hosts China scored a fine 2.5-1.5 win against Ukraine in the second round. Alexander Areshchenko blew another very reasonable position out of the opening for his second consecutive loss and a probable long term place on the subs bench in getting himself crushed in 28 moves by Ding Liren on bottom board. The remaining games were drawn with Ivanchuk failing to convert a favourable position against Wang Hao and a similar story for Efimenko against Li Chao. Emil Sutovsky beat Ahmed Adly and Nataby beat Ezat to secure a 3-1 victory for Israel over Egypt in one would imagine one of the more politically sensitive fixtures of the event. At least the match took place unlike the one at the Olympiad 2010 where the Yemen team were pressurised into not playing. Egypt and Israel met for the first time in 27 years at the 2008 Olympiad. Levon Aronian got in a terrible mess against Gata Kamsky playing rather too boldy for the attack with black starting with 24...f5, that didn't mean that the chances he did get weren't at least a little frightening as the board turned into a mess. Kamsky could have held on to the big advantage by tucking his king away on g1 or h1 on move 38, instead he converted to a somewhat favourable ending and it turned out well for him as he had a decisive advantage by second time control. Alexander Onischuk lost his second consecutive game with black when his position disintegrated against Movsesian on the run up to first time control. Shulman vs Akopian and Sargissian against the returning Yasser Seirawan were both drawn. Final score USA - Armenia 2-2.

8th World Team Chess Championship 2011 Ningbo, China - Round 2 report

Aronian_lost_to_Kamsky_in_round_2"Yinzhou Cup" 2011 World Team Chess championship today continues round 2 in Ningbo New Century Grand Hotel, China. The defending champion Russia team holds another 3-1 win over Hungary team, taking consective triumphs. China team 2.5-1.5 win over Ukraine, Azerbaijan 3-1 wins India team, Israel team 3-1 win over Eygpt team, and the U.S.team 2-2 draws with Armenia Team. Russian superstar Sergey Karjakin (2788) comes across prestigious gentleman player Peter Leko (2717) in round 2 competition. Wearing brown casual dress, Karjakin moves very fast, while Peter Leko in blue suit and thinking the game very hard. Two players start game as Ruy Lopez, Karjakin makes 28.g4!? to close all road, and eventually lead the game to draw. Compared with Karjakin, Ian Nepomniachtchi plays more aggressive towards "alien girl" Judit Polgar. Maybe keeping the heart to give his opponent a blow, Ian completed each step then can not wait to leave the seat and check his teammates situation. At move 32, Polgar run into time panic, has only 40 seconds on clock to finish eight moves while Ian is attacking furiously. Manage to get through 40 moves, the situation is already crack down for black. Watching Russian star Alexander Grischuck winning another game, Judit Polgar reluctantly return to her seat and signed to surrender. China team met with Olympic champion Ukraine today, and top seed player Wang Hao had some tough time toward "uncrowned king" Ivanchuk. Two players in the Sicilian Defense battle, Ivanchuk took very considerable advantage of the situation but failed to hold, and Wang Hao gradually regained the equal position.

board-1

Here is an interesting option: 50. Rg7!? (instead of the 50 Ivanchuk. Rd6) 50 ... Ke6 51. g4!  (trying to weave a mat net, but after 51. Kg3 Bd5 52. Rg5 Bb3 53. Rd6+ Ke7 54. Rg7+ Bf7 55. Rxh7 Qc8 56. Rg7 h4+ ! 57. Kxh4 Qf5 58. Kg3 Qe4 59. h7 Qe1 + 60. Kg4 Qh1 White does not reach the goal) 51 ... Bd5! (the exact answer) 52. Rg5 Bb3 , and now White has to play 53. Rxh5!  - after all, a good chance of winning (if 53. Rd6+ ?! Ke7 54. Rg7+, then 54 ... Bf7!, and nothing, for example, 55. g5 Qa8 56. Rf6 Qa2+ 57. Kh3 Qb3+ with a draw, since White can not play 58. Kh4?? because of 58 ... Qf3!).

board-2

Very real chances to score had been missed on his next turn Ivanchuk extension 51. b5? Instead, the option 51. Rg7+ Bf7 52. f5 b6 (the other is not visible) 53. Rxh7 bxc5 54. bxc5 Qb4 (again only one chance) 55. f6+ Kf8 56. Rh8+ Bg8 and now 57. Rd1! the inevitable h6-h7, winning an elephant - gave white on all grounds technically winning position Grandmaster Li Chao also in tough position but successfully defended to draw, while teenager Ding Liren broke the standoff and won his game at 4th broad, helping Chinese team eventually beat strong Ukraine with 2.5-1.5. World Team Championship starts in Ningbo, China

17.07.2011It is a kind of exclusive Olympiad, in which only ten elite teams compete for top honors. With such a high level selection, including the likes of Aronian, Karjakin, Ivanchuk, and more, there are no weak match-ups, and the very first round saw Goliath versus Goliath, and in one case, a Goliath versus David, with a result similar to the Bible tale.

The Chinese Chess Association with the patronage and support of the Ningbo Municipal Government and Ningbo Sports Bureau is staging the 2011 World Team Chess Championship in Ningbo, China. The event is being held from July 15 2011 (arrival) to July 26 2011 (Departure) at the playing venue in the five-star New Century Grand Hotel Ningbo.

The team composition for each round must be delivered to the arbiters at 9:00 am in the morning.

System and scoring

The championships is a round robin, with each team playing a match against all other teams. The time control is: 90 min for 40 moves, then 30 min for the rest of the game, with a 30 second increment per move, staring from move one. The scoring is as in the FIDE Chess Olympiads: the winner gets two points, a draw gives each team one point, and a loss is scored as 0 points. If any teams finish with equal match points, the tie is resolved as follows:
  1. by board points in total;
  2. in case of a tie by the scores obtained by the tying teams against each other; if the tie is still not broken;
  3. by the Berger system;
  4. if it is still equal by board count (Berlin System) as follows: a win on Board 1 = 4 points, a win on Board 2 = 3 points, a win on Board 3 = 2 points, a win on Board 4 = 1 points. In case of drawn games these points are shared. If the board-count does not results in the tie being broken then the board points of Board 4 are cancelled, and so on upwards until the tie is broken.
  5. If a tie still results between teams in contention for medals, these teams play a match against each other at a fast time-rate (15 minutes per player for the entire game);
  6. if this match is indecisive, then lots are drawn (with a collective sigh of dismay by the arbiters).
Chief Arbiter is Panagiotis Nikolopoulos (Greece). One Deputy Chief Arbiter and three arbiters are from China.

Sasikiran saves the day

   Monday , July 18 , 2011  The Telegraph , calcutta, india

Ningbo: Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran wobbled before eventually defeating Zoltan Almasi to help India salvage a 2-2 draw against Hungary in the first round of the World Team Chess Championship that got underway here. P. Harikrishna had done well, earlier, to hold highly regarded Peter Leko on the top board while G. N. Gopal split the point with Csaba Balogh on the fourth. But Surya Shekhar Ganguly went down to world’s best woman player Judit Polgar to give Hungary the lead, which forced Sasikiran to play for a victory with black pieces. Meanwhile, Armenia emerged as the early leader in world’s premier team championship giving Israel a 3.5-0.5 drubbing. Without their star player Boris Gelfand, Israeli team lacked sting and Levon Aronian led from the front. The United States went down to Russia 1-3 losing with black pieces on second and fourth board while lowest ranked Egypt sprang a surprise knocking down 1.5 points off Ukraine. The other match in the 10-teams round-robin event was a 2-2 draw between China and Azerbaijan. Sasikiran had reasons to be worried in the middle game after Almasi seized the initiative out of a Breyer variation in the Ruy Lopez. It was a typical middle game with white striving for a king-side attack but Sasikiran did well to stay in the game after complicating matters a great deal. Almasi was on top for a while but let the game slip out of hand gradually after being an exchange up. Earlier, Harikrishna played his pet Catalan opening as white and apparently had a slight edge in the ensuing endgame against Peter Leko. Subsequent exchanges led to further simplifications and Harikrishna liquidated to a drawn rook endgame with three pawns on the same flank.

Armenia jump to early lead after first round of World Team Chess Championships

There was an exciting first round of the 8th World Team Championship in Ningbo, China with just 8 of the 20 games drawn. Armenia took an early lead with a thumping 3.5-1.5 win against Israel, Russia convincingly beat the USA 3-1 and Ukraine beat bottom seeds Egypt 2.5-1.5 but conceded a loss, the other 2 matches were drawn. Russia got off to a solid start with a convincing 3-1 win against the USA. Karjakin and Svidler held Kamsky and Shulman easily with black, Nepomniachtchi quickly outplayed Onischuk in the middlegame and Robert Hess' 14...Rf8 was new and he quickly got into trouble in a position his opponent probably knew better than him. Emil Sutovsky of Israel went for Levon Aronian with an unsound sacrifice with black on move 10. Aronian had to get a wandering king safe but once that happened the result was a formality. With wins from Akopian and Sargissian Armenia took an early lead. Ukraine beat bottom seeds 2.5-1.5 but they did have the consolation of Samy Shoker winning from a probably lost, but sharp position as black against Alexander Areschenko. Ivanchuk and Moiseenko won for Ukraine. Host China drew 2-2 with Azerbaijan with Wang Yue winning with black against Vugar Gashimov. Gashimov returned to the Azerbaijani team following the departure of Zurab Azaiparashvili as captain. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov had an easy win against the young Yu Yangyi to level things up. Ganguly blundered his position away just before second time control against Judit Polgar, a similar mistake cost Almasi his position against Sasikiran as Hungary and India drew 2-2.
